Why 'The Gorgeous Beer Company'?
How is Gorgeous Beer made?
Our beers take 7 days to ferment. This is preceded by quite a technical ,scientific process which begins at 6am. We begin by filling a grist case with malted barley. The temperature must be checked, along with the quality of the liquor before we mash the malt and water together. Next, we rinse the most fermentable sugars from the malt and pump the wort (the sugary malt liquid) into a copper pot where we then boil it.
Next we add the magical hops.
The wort is then pumped to the fermenter where the yeast is added. This is the last step before the 7 day wait for the brew to perfect itself. In the meantime, we like to go and enjoy a few (really, just a few) home-brews ourselves.
After the seven days, the yeast is put to sleep by chilling the beer, otherwise the fermentation would just keep on going. The brew is then ready to rack into barrels and deliver to our partner pubs.
Why Brewer's Gold and Progress hops?
Hops are used as a type of ‘seasoning’ in beer, so flavour is absolutely key. After much deliberation and a great deal of taste-testing, we came to the conclusion that Brewer’s Gold and Progress were the best choices for our beers. However, we do plan to use a number of ‘guest’ hops in our seasonal beers.
Brewer’s Gold has been around for almost 100 years, beginning its life in Wye College in 1919. Over the years it has established an excellent reputation. In fact, Brewer’s Gold is an ancestor to a variety of other popular hops varieties. We use it to provide our beer with its distinctive bitterness – a taste which is most commonly found in paler ales. This particular variety of hops gives our beers a hint of spice, making them that little bit more interesting.
Progress hops are another Wye College classic, but this variety is much younger than Brewer’s Gold. Progress gives beer an earthy or floral flavour, which we think works brilliantly in a traditional English beer. It’s another variety of hops that are particularly good for brewing paler ales.

What is the difference between real ale and everyday beers?
Real ale is something entirely different to the normal every-day beers you might find in chain pubs and restaurants. For a start, real ale is brewed by artisans – individual experts in the field, who work in small independent breweries like ours.
Real ale also tastes different. It actually contains a flavour rather than just tasting like your standard mass produced beer. Depending on the ingredients used, particularly the hops, a real ale can be spicy, earthy, floral, and might even have citrus or blackcurrant undertones, amongst many other possible flavours.
A lot of beers are usually served ice cold, which does have its place on a hot day. Real ale, however, should be served at the temperature that works best for that particular beer. Serving a real ale ice cold detracts from its unique flavour, so temperature really is key when it comes to real ale.
The best way to understand the difference between a real ale and a standard beer is by trying it for yourself, and our beers are a great place to start!

What can I expect from an open day at the brewery?
We may be a small brewery, but we are always hard at work making gorgeous beer. You will be able to see the entire process from start to finish – from handling the raw ingredients at the beginning to tasting the final product. You will also get the chance to meet our team of expert brewers and discover the true essence of The Gorgeous Beer Company. It is, after all, our people and their knowledge that make the beer what it is.
How do I become a stockist?
If you want to become a stockist you can contact us to register your interest and one of our team will get in touch with you. We will then be able to arrange a date for you to meet us, where we will discuss our products and options for becoming a trade partner. We like to be able to meet all our potential partners in person so we can get to know you and make sure we can meet your needs.
I want a barrel of beer for a party at home. Can you help?
We certainly can! Our 72 pint barrels are enough to keep any party going for a while. Get in touch with our team and we will be able to arrange something to suit you.
Do you brew seasonal beers?
We are currently working on introducing four brand new seasonal beers in time for peak seasons, including Christmas. We are also brewing up a number of one-off, unique specialty beers for different seasons throughout the year. What temperature are your the beers best served at?
It is a common myth that English beers should be served at room temperature. However, this is actually not the case – the English like their beer cold too! The general rule is that bitters like ours should be served at cellar temperature, which is somewhere between 7 and 12 degrees Celsius.
It does, however, depend on which beer you are serving, and colour makes all the difference here. The lighter the colour, the colder it should be. With this is mind, our Blond Ale would be best served a little colder than the Golden Bitter.
Are you working on any new products?
Beer is our passion and we are constantly experimenting with new flavours to expand our range. We will also be supplying 500ml bottles and growlers in the very near future, along with one-off speciality beers at Christmas.
What is a growler?
Growlers are portable containers, usually ceramic or glass, that can be used to take home draft beer from your local bar. They can come in a variety of sizes, from 330ml to 3 litres. Growlers date back to the 19th century, when beer would be carried home in a small galvanised pail. The term ‘growler’ is thought to have originated from the sound of the carbon dioxide escaping from the lid as it was carried home!
Where do you see yourselves in five years' time?
Our aim is to produce Gorgeous Beer that UK pubs and restaurants will love to serve and the public will love to drink. While we wouldn’t want to lose our status as producers of quality, real ale, we hope that more and more people will be introduced to real ale and fall in love with it, just as we have! We want all of you to get behind the UK real ale movement and enjoy The Gorgeous Beer Company products, both now and in the future.
